Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 32

This is the first anime I've watched in about 6 years, and I only watched it at the behest of my lady friend. After falling in love with this series I wonder what else I haven't seen that I need to. Any suggestions oppo?

I love FLCL! My girlfriend got me hooked onto Black Butler. Pretty dark little anime, but it's a fun one.

if you like FLCL, you might like kill la kill, needless, and gurren lagan. Some that I have liked lately are attack on titan, and book of bantorra.

This is what I'm currently watching. It's a slice-of-life type of anime, about a Tokyo kid enrolling and studying in a farming high school in Hokkaido. Season 2 is ongoing, so you have time to catch-up in Hulu.

As a secondary recommendation, there are a lot of older anime that may have slipped your notice that are probably worth it: see e.g. Getter Robo.

the intro to big O cracks me up every time. Used to watch that business on cartoon network.

I was assuming if he liked FLCL he might not necessarily want a series with meandering seriousness and psychodrama, but he very well might.

Gah! I always forget about Outlaw Star. Watch that one as well.

In the "old anime" subcategory, there's also this and Space Battleship Yamato. Also Trigun, obviously, if you haven't seen that (which you likely have). FMA is also high on the "likely seen already" list, though it wouldn't include Brotherhood, which as a partial reboot makes things a bit more confusing.

a valid point FLCL is pretty... non-standard :D

There must be something forgettey about Outlaw Star, I keep forgetting to put it on my list to watch.

I heard that Brotherhood actually fills in a lot of the gaps left from the original series; haven't watched it yet but it's still in my queue

I watched most of it immediately after the original - by which I mean I was in the same room as people watching all of it. Pretty good, but even with some good things in the overwritten-by-new parts, if I were to throw someone into the series fresh, I'd probably just give them Brotherhood to avoid confusion.

Ghost in the Shell is my personal all-time favorite. The Movies, the TV show - all of it. Such a great cyber-punk thriller with philosophical everything. It's like Blade Runner, but anime.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, one of my favorite OVAs that I just discovered out of nowhere is Broken Blade. Not only does it have a great plot, and a very interesting world - its mechs, but pretty much powered by "magic" instead of anything electronic or mechanical. Yet still vastly different from Escaflowne (before you think it sounds familiar). Also, in one of the episodes, the protagonist leaps his robot off a giant claymore he stuck into the ground. I mean...that's just fucking awesome.

I really wish there was more than one season to Outlaw Star. There are a few occasions where I actually preferred Outlaw Star to Cowboy Bebop despite not being as critically hailed as Bebop.

Also, I love the "magic" and casters! Paguwa Sunpha!

Shows I would recommend are: Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic!, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Gurren Lagann, Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop.

I think Outlaw Star can be more fun, but Bebop is a work of art in all aspects. Depends on my mood for which one I prefer.

I second pretty much everything that's been brought up so far, and have a couple of my own recommendations.

Macross Zero:

(Planes that transform into mecha, prequel to the rest of the franchise.)

Macross Frontier:

(The most recent entry in the Macross franchise. Same as the above, but with more space, pop singers, and awesome. The video's actually cut from one of the Macross Frontier films, which are a sort of alternate retelling of the television series. The rest of the series isn't quite as bonkers as this one sequence - indeed, it's actually a fairly serious space opera, in its own way - but I love this bit so much that I couldn't help but show it.)

...

(If you do decide to watch Macross, it might be a good idea to read into some of the lore. It's been going for over thirty years.)

It amuses me that Black Butler is about a butler who is a white guy.

(I've heard that it's good, but I wasn't able to get into it last time I tried to watch it.)

Let's see, what hasn't been suggested yet?

I liked Wagneria!!, AKA Working!! quite a bit.

If you want something that can really tug on your heartstrings in an unexpected way, Angel Beats! is fantastic, as is Clannad, which is by the same team.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is probably the only "giant robots" anime that I've actually enjoyed watching.

I enjoyed FLCL but I really dislike Gurren Lagan. The "Woo! Look how much wackier this episode is than the last one!" thing just didn't appeal to me much.

Fullmetal Alchemist is great, but has some of the most abrupt tonal shifts of any series I've watched, so be forewarned.
